Last night I was invited by Disney to attend the first Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party of the season as well as participate in media opportunities. Even if I hadn't received this opportunity, I would've bought a ticket myself and attended anyway because I love the party so much and I'm always eager to go as soon as the season starts. As a WDW local, I'm constantly asked IS THE PARTY WORTH IT? Below I'm going to answer that question by sharing my top 5 reasons why I love this event sooo stinkin' much.
(Spoiler alert- it's totally worth it!)
Let's start with some basic info about MNSSHP:
It's an after-dark special ticketed event on select nights August 17- October 31st in Magic Kingdom.
Pricing for the tickets start at $85 for adults and $80 for kids (ages 3-9) plus tax. Save $10 on your tickets compared to the day-of purchase price when you buy at least a day in advance.
I would recommend you purchasing your tickets online in advance as parties do tend to sell out. Especially if you're planning to attend on a popular date close to Halloween. The party hours are 7PM- Midnight but you can enter the park as early as 4PM with the event ticket... that is huge because that's extra hours you can enjoy MK without having to pay the regular admission price. Definitely take advantage of that extra time to ride some rides or eat a nice meal before all the craziness starts.
Now I'll get into the reasons WHY you should attend this event as well as what spooktacular fun you can expect.
1. The ENTERTAINMENT
Boo To You Halloween Parade
A collection of frightening floats featuring Disney Characters in Halloween costumes all led by The Headless Horseman himself.. (and yes he's actually headless- GASP!) This is probably my favorite parade of all time. It's such a fun and special sight to see. But OMG be prepared to have the theme song "Boo To You" stuck in your head for the rest of your life. I'm literally humming it right now...
This production is so impressive it takes a cast of 175 performers, float drivers, costumers, cosmetologists, decorators and maintenance cast members to bring it to life.
Happy HalloWishes Fireworks Show
So much more than just fireworks... the Ghost Host from the Haunted Mansion invites you to drop in as Disney Villains light up the night with fireworks and a wicked version of melodies from Disney’s past that echo through the night—and creepy colors crawl over Cinderella Castle.
The scare-abration gets into full swing when some of the Disney Villains we most love to hate—including Maleficent, Ursula, Cruella de Vil, Jafar and Oogie Boogie—croon their scary tunes and do their best to steal the show.
Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular
An over-the-top stage show hosted by the mischievous and hilarious Sanderson Sisters.
To be honest I'm not a Hocus Pocus fan at all. I've only seen half the movie once and I'm not really into all that witchy, spell-y, dark magic-y stuff... but this show is super FUNNY and so entertaining! The performances are broadway quality and nothing beats having so many classic Disney villains together on stage dancing and singing.
Look for appearances from Dr. Facilier, Oogie Boogie, Maleficent, Evil Queen, Captain Hook, Evil Stepmother, Hades & more frightful friends.
Combine them with other amazing dancers, wild visual projections and otherworldly special effects to make it a "can't miss" experience!
I can't stress enough how great the entertainment is; in my opinion it's the biggest selling point. Be sure to pick up an event map when you enter the park so you can plan for the show times and viewing locations. That map will be your best friend for all kinds of important info throughout the night.
But don't worry, it's all really-not-so-scary... just fiendish fun! ;)
2. Candy, Costumes & Characters!
Trick-orTreat the night away throughout the park! (Adults too!) There's even allergy friendly options so everyone can feel free to participate. This is a FREE activity at the party and there's no limit so stock up on as many sugary delights as you want.
40 different kinds of candy are given out at 14 different tasty treat locations around the park.
Dress up! Seriously most people do! Some choose to go all out in full, elaborate costumes where others (like me) choose to get festive in a more casual way. Whatever your preference, it's the perfect time to be silly, be creative and show your style. Speaking of dressing up, one of my favorite things to do at the party is sit on Main Street while I'm waiting for the parade to start and just PEOPLE WATCH. There are so many impressive and interesting costumes to see!
Meet iconic Disney characters dressed in their Halloween best! Even if you feel like you've met some of the main characters a million times, you can find rare characters out at the party. (All seven dwarves, Jack & Sally, Lotso Bear, Tarzan & Jane and more!)
3. Speciality Treats!
In addition to loads of free candy, specially themed treats are available throughout the park.
*Note- all food items in this category are separate costs, not included in your event ticket.*
The menus vary each year but I'll show a few favorite offerings I tried last night. I've also included a link to the official Disney Parks Blog post about ALL the party treats available (including a few savory items too.) Click the link to see some drool worthy photos as well as read the food descriptions. Food locations will be listed in your event map (see I told you it would be your BFF.)
My favorite every year is usually candy corn soft serve but oooo it has some competition with that key lime soft serve. It's light, refreshing, fruity and oh so YUMMY! Plus check out that black waffle cone and chocolate Maleficent horns... majorly Instagrammable.
As soon as you scan your ticket, you're welcomed by cast members in head-to-toe festive costumes. The moment you enter the park, your eyes will wander to Mickey pumpkin wreaths, colorful banners and dapper scarecrows. The night only gets better as a very spooky Main Street comes alive with colorful light projections on the buildings and danceable Halloween hits play.
Fun Fact: 176 individually themed carved pumpkins adorn the balconies and window sills of Main Street USA.
This fall illusion will have you forgetting that it's probably still 90 degrees out... Ha!
This is something that affects everyones even if you're an annual pass holder and visit the parks weekly like I do.. The party is a separate ticketed event every time which means everyone pays the big bucks if ya wanna attend! If I haven't made myself clear with all the goodness described above, I think MNSSHP is a tremendous value. You get 8 hours in the park (all the attractions are open all night btw), you get to watch an incredible fireworks show, parade, stage show, trick-or-tricking, special character meets, special merchandise exclusive to party guests, delicious food and LOWER CROWDS! Ahh yes, a great perk to a special event is that they let significantly less people in than they do on standard operating park days. You can expect noticeably shorter lines for the rides because most people spend their time in lines for characters or waiting for the entertainment.
BONUS: New This Year! Bring Gunpowder Pete to Justice on Pirates of the Caribbean On Pirates of the Caribbean, live pirates invade the experience, interacting with sailing guests who will join the search for “Gunpowder Pete.”
Take a Whirl in New Color with the Mad Tea Party Teacups The Mad Tea Party will take guests for a colorful teacup ride as new lighting and effects give a new spin on the night.
Explore Deep Space on Space Mountain Explorers visiting Space Mountain will hurtle through deep space as a new soundtrack and more transform the adventure.
Dance and Play During Storybook Circus Disney Junior Jam Storybook Circus welcomes the Storybook Circus Disney Junior Jam, a dance party featuring favorite Disney Junior Characters, including Doc McStuffins.
If you plan to attend this year, I hope you have a ghastly good time! Thanks so much for taking the time to read this post and thanks to Disney for inviting me (always a pleasure!)
